Foliage Plants

Green is a color you never tire of, restful to the eye and refreshing to the spirit. That is one reason why foliage plants are so popular. Indoors, in winter, green leaves hint of springtime to come; in summer, they look cool and woodsy when temperatures soar.

You can’t possibly grow all the desirable foliage plants there are. Use pictures and cultural information here, as well as in the portfolio section, to choose those plants having the qualities you admire.

Size is a prime factor in your choice of house plants, so begin by considering some of the big, handsome varieties that can hold their own in decorative roles. The India rubber tree, for example, pictured far left across the page, is probably the most popular of all large house plants. Its big, shiny leaves offer good contrast to the textures of other home furnishings. And it requires only minimal care. Both the rubber tree and its relative, the fiddle-leaf fig, at its right, tolerate medium light and average house humidity quite well. Their only real enemy is overwatering, which will cause root rot.
